We invite you to come and share the history and grand elegance of the inn. One of the original 13 properties of Tappahannock which dates back to 1705; the Inn is ideally situated for a historical stroll of the village whose Native American name meant "town on the rise and fall of water". St. Margaret's school for girls is conveniently located across the street from the inn and a historic walking tour starts on the doorstep of The Essex. Within a block or two there are many antique stores and several restaurants including Lowry's, a Tappahannock tradition since the 1940s.
Many recreational activities are also available close to our beautiful Virginia bed and breakfast. Guests can play a round of golf or go fishing or cruising on the Rappahannock River. Go canoeing up one of the many unspoiled creeks or biking in town and along beautiful country roads. Visit one of the charming towns nearby such as Urbanna or Irvington or enjoy a wine tasting at Ingleside winery or one of the other ten wineries in the area.
Day trips to the many civil war sites or historic attractions include Colonial Williamsburg, Fredericksburg and the birthplace of General Robert E Lee, StratfordHall plantation.
