We invite you to come and share the history and grand elegance of the inn. One of the original 13 properties of Tappahannock which dates back to 1705; the Inn is ideally situated for a historical stroll of the village whose Native American name meant "town on the rise and fall of water". St. Margaret's school for girls is conveniently located across the street from the inn and a historic walking tour starts on the doorstep of The Essex. Within a block or two there are many antique stores and several restaurants including Lowry's, a Tappahannock tradition since the 1940s.

Day trips to the many civil war sites or historic attractions include Colonial Williamsburg, Fredericksburg and the birthplace of General Robert E Lee, StratfordHall plantation.
