The Essex Inn offers its guests elegant and spacious Virginia accommodations and fine southern hospitality in a lovely setting nestled in the heart of Tappahannock, VA’s downtown historic district. Each of these gorgeous rooms and suites is a perfect choice for a relaxing romantic retreat or weekend getaway. Offering a variety of amenities suited to corporate travel, guests in the area for business will find The Essex an ideal choice.

In the main house:

Located in the main house, these spacious rooms are all located on the second floor of the house accessible by stairs only. They feature custom-made four-poster beds and gas fireplaces. They all have cable TV, WiFi, individually controlled air conditioning and heat, hair dryers, irons, smooth-as-silk ironed sheets, and plenty of oversized soft towels and our custom amenities. A full, three-course gourmet breakfast is included.

The "Quarters"

(Two-night minimum stay required on the weekend, limited to three people per suite) Once used as the servants' quarters, these four unique suites all feature separate sitting rooms, one bedroom and full kitchen. They are all equipped with cable tv in both the living room and the bedroom, individually controlled air conditioning and heat, microwaves, stoves, refrigerators, hair dryers, irons, smooth-as-silk ironed sheets, plenty of oversized soft towels, and our custom amenities.

Guests staying in the suites have 2 options for breakfast. The full breakfast


served in the main house between 8-10 am. Or, for those with their own schedules or looking for more privacy, an extended continental breakfast including homemade muffins, English muffins and/or bagels, yogurt, fruit, cereal, and juice will provided in the suite. Please specify your preference when making your reservation.

Policies and other necessary information:

All rates include breakfast and afternoon snack; are subject to a 7% tax; and may be changed.

Adding a third person to a room is $35.00 extra. Two people using two separate beds in one rooms is $15.00 extra. Well-behaved children over the age of 2 are welcome, however each child is considered a person. None of our rooms will accommodate more than 3 people.

The Inn welcomes pets with prior approval. Please read our pet policy first.

Advanced reservations are recommended. A deposit equivalent to one night's stay is required at the time of reservation. This will be applied to the last night of the actual stay. Shortened stays are subject to the standard cancellation policy. The deposit may be paid by Visa, Master Card, American Express or by sending a check within seven days of making your reservation. Spring, Summer and Fall are particularly busy times; call us as soon as you know of your plans.

We have a seven day (one week) cancellation policy. If your must cancel your reservation, please cancel at least 7 days prior to the first day of your reservation. Reservations cancelled within 7 days will be subject to a charge equal to the full reservation cost. We will do our best to resell any cancelled rooms and will refund for any resold rooms. Certain weekends and group reservations may be subject to extended cancellation periods. Cancellations made by email will not be considered unless you receive an email reply from the inn. It is suggested that unless you hear from us by email after canceling, you backup your cancellation by phone.

A two-night minimum stay is required on weekends all year round. The Quarters suites require a two-night minimum at all times. However, check Availability because Thursday-Friday and Saturday-Sunday rentals are common, leaving a single Friday or Saturday open. A three-night minimum stay is required on holiday weekends - Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Race weekends and Columbus Day.

Check-in is 3 PM - 10 PM. Check-out is 11 AM.
