The Essex Inn was the first bed and breakfast to be accepted into Virginia's Green Lodging Program.
Green Lodging encourages hotels, resorts, and inns to be aware of their impact on the Environment and to take steps to reduce these impacts.
Green Lodging is a non-regulatory program, and participation is completely voluntary and free of charge.

IT'S EASY BEING GREEN PROGRAM:
Park you car when you arrive and stay for two nights.
You can then take the Tappahannock Historic Walking Tour; walk to
the embarkment point of the Captain Thomas River/Wine Cruise;
enjoy walking to shops, the river, restaurants, and even visit
the Essex County Historical museum.
If you bring your bike you can ride to hidden creeks,
golf courses, and the movies! All without using your car!!!
Best of all, you can participate in our Green Tappahannock Scavenger Hunt* –
Participants will receive up to 30% off their stay!
The Essex Inn Green Tappahannock Scavenger Hunt
This is a program that we’ve put together to entertain you while staying green at the inn.
Similar to a scavenger hunt, participants will receive a list of questions to answer and
tasks to perform during their stay. The answers to the questions can be easily be found by walking
around historic Tappahannock and the tasks are simple and eco based.
For example one of the questions is where the compost bin at the Essex Inn is located.
One of the tasks included is to bring a piece of recyclable trash back from your walk.
Guests who complete the hunt will receive 20% off of their room rate.
There is also an opportunity to receive extra credit and earn additional discounts.
Extra credit can be earned by doing any or all of the following:
Arrive at the Inn in a hybrid car – An additional 5% off of your rate.
Watch the movie An Inconvenient Truth during your stay (we provide the movie) - An additional 2.5% off of your rate.
Bring your bike and ride it during your stay. - An additional 2.5% off of your rate.
Suggest a new Green practice that the Inn will employ that is not already being used - An additional 5% off of your rate.
